The breed was favored by the royalty of the Chinese Imperial court as both a lap dog and companion dog, and its name refers to the city of Peking (Beijing) where the Forbidden City is located. The breed has several characteristics and health issues related to its unique appearance. Because of its desirable characteristics, the Pekingese has been part of the development of designer crossbreeds, such as the Peekapoo (crossed with a poodle) and Peke-a-tese (crossed with a Maltese). The breed originated in Western China.

The Pekingese temperament makes her a keeper. She can easily form a strong bond of loyalty and friendship, particularly with the recognized alpha leader of the pack. However, don't be taken for a fool: she is neither dainty nor delicate. Her little body belies her boldness and courageous disposition.
She is a brave little dog with an independent spirit, and her bold and daring streak makes her a good watchdog. The temperaments of Pekingese are loving, loyal, courageous, intelligent, and affectionate. They are highly affectionate dogs who will form an extremely close bond with their family members. It is not considered to be highly energetic dogs, though they require daily exercise to keep them healthy.
