The Labrador Retriever has been used for many years as a duck retriever and fisherman's partner, making it the typical water dog of Newfoundland. When English nobility visiting Canada in the early 1800s noticed Labs, the breed's slow ascent to ultimate popularity began. These athletic earls and lords brought excellent specimens of "Labrador dogs" back to England. (It's unclear how exactly these Newfoundland dogs got to be known as Labradors, but the name persisted.) The breed was improved upon and standardised by British breeders in the second part of the 19th century. The Lab's initial function is recalled by the physical and temperamental breed characteristics that have become so recognisable to millions of admirers worldwide today. Because longhaired retrievers would be covered in ice upon emerging from the water in a Canadian winter, it was desirable that they have a short, dense, weatherproof coat. A Lab would be sent to a fishing boat in its native land to pick up fish that fell off the trawl. As a result, the dog needed a coat appropriate for the chilly waters of the North Atlantic in addition to possessing innate instincts as a retriever.
