The Labrador Retriever has been used for many years as a duck retriever and fisherman's partner, making it the typical water dog of Newfoundland. When English nobility visiting Canada in the early 1800s noticed Labs, the breed's slow ascent to ultimate popularity began. These athletic earls and lords brought excellent specimens of "Labrador dogs" back to England. (It's unclear how exactly these Newfoundland dogs got to be known as Labradors, but the name persisted.) The breed was improved upon and standardized by British breeders in the second part of the 19th century. The Lab's initial function is recalled by the physical and temperamental breed characteristics that have become so recognizable to millions of admirers worldwide today.
